birth story

kolby had his two week check up on thursday. he is growing like a champ and is up to 8 lbs. he is a predictable newbown--eats, sleeps, pees and poops and eats some more. i can't believe he is almost three weeks old!

here is his story...

he was due friday, may 11th but i was really hoping for the end of april. avery was born 4 weeks early so i thought there was a chance he could come early enough to be an april baby.

as a reminder here is a brief overview of my delivery experience with avery: i woke up a few days before my 36 week mark with what i thought was the flu. i had a fever, the chills and just felt horrible all over. josh was gone all day and i just thought that maybe it would go away with a day of rest. i finally decided i better take my temperature and it was above the limit when they want you to get checked out. so we decided we better head to the er. i assumed i just was gonna be given some fluids and be sent home. i had some blood work done and a urine test done. they found i had a kidney infection and wanted me to stay over night to get some antibiotics. they also found protein in my urine and decided they would do a 24 hour urine collection to see just how much protein since i would be there anyways. my blood pressure was also quite high...not to mention i had severe swelling...all signs of pre-eclampsia. so there i was...not at all what i expected! after my 24 hour stay they decided i was gonna be induced because i did indeed have pre-eclampsia. so after a couple days of cervidil and hours of pitocin i finally started having contractions. they hurt. for some reason i didn't get my epidural until after a couple hours of painful contractions. it finally came and it was amazing.  delivery was smooth and easy. right before being moved to my new post partum room a nurse pushed on my stomach and i bled. a lot. we got cleaned up and moved. i was put on magnesium. it was terrible! they debated giving me a blood transfusion but settled with iron pills and monitored me. we went home a couple days later. so not the most pleasant 5 days {3 of which i was on bed rest and the other 2 i could barely move from the delivery and magnesium} of my life.

kolby was a much more pleasant experience. i really wanted to go into labor on my own and for some reason really wanted my water to break. for days i had read other women's experiences with their water breaking out in public and how it was actually much more common to have it break in the hospital. so i didn't get my hopes up.

on monday, april 30th i had pretty much given up hope that my april baby would happen. i posted on facebook that my chances of having my baby were slipping away {even though i still hoped it would happen and had a slight feeling that maybe it would}. i didn't know that just a few hours later those chances were about to change.

josh works during the day and gets home at 3pm so it was just avery and i at home. okay, here is where it may be too much information, but oh well. as usual i had to pee a ton that day. but, something was a little different. even after i had thought i finished peeing i still was peeing a little. i tried to think nothing of it, but since i had read so many stories about women having their water leak and not fully break it kinda got my hopes up. but i just kinda waited it out to see if it would happen again. it did. and again and again. i told josh when he got home what was going on and he of course didn't think anything of it. i just let it go, but in the back of my mind i knew it wasn't pee. i decided i would just go about my day and headed off to my nieces softball game with avery. at the end of the game i stood up and all of a sudden my pants were wet. i was quite embarrassed. i told my mom and sister that i either just peed my pants or my water just broke. luckily, it was getting dark already so nobody could see my wet pants but just in case my mom walked behind me up to the bathroom. there wasn't much i could do there so i decided i would just go home and try to figure out if it was my water that broke or if i peed my pants. i had read so many stories online about women having to sit on towels and blankets after their water broke so i grabbed the only thing i had in my car--a plastic grocery bag--just in case more came out. i got home and after going back and forth whether or not to go to the hospital to get checked i decided to just go in to be sure. i packed a bag for avery and called my mom to tell her we were bringing her over. i packed a bag for myself {something i didn't get to do when i had avery}. the whole way to the hospital i told josh that maybe we should just turn around and wait a little bit longer to see if i started having contractions because i didn't want to go in and be super embarrassed if i really did just pee my pants. i even sat in the car for a bit because i wasn't sure if i wanted to go in. but, we did.

stay tuned for what happened next {kolby needs me}....
